Commissioner Vega Pederson's Statement on Multnomah County's Adopted Budget

May 25, 2017

“A budget is a reflection of values and I am proud of the budget Multnomah County adopted today. Our budget was shaped by the public’s input, ideas, and priorities. As a result, we devoted a record amount of funding to address housing and homelessness - funding that will go towards proven strategies, as well as new, innovative programs that reduce homelessness and improve housing stability.

“We’re also addressing mental health issues in our criminal justice system, expanding our youth and family services, investing in maternal and child health, furthering economic development and strengthening diversion programs. We’re responsibly setting aside reserves in anticipation of state or federal cuts and reducing long term debt by putting money toward large capital projects.

“Our public hearings vividly illustrated how much this work matters. During the budget process we heard from people who received addiction services and kicked their habits; finally had a warm place to stay on a cold night; were steered from gangs to a more productive path; received vital health services; or were provided a helping hand in another way.

“There’s more to do, but I’m proud of what this budget accomplishes and thank Chair Kafoury for her leadership, and my fellow three commissioners for their ideas, efforts and partnership throughout the process.”
