Vancouver, Wash. - The Clark County Commission on Aging is focusing this year on supportive services, especially for people 60 and older. Transportation allows residents of all ages and abilities to connect with others and maintain independence. It is a hallmark of a livable community.
The year-long focus will educate and raise awareness about future transportation and mobility challenges and solutions that could help Clark County's older residents age in their homes and neighborhoods for as long as possible.
Meetings are at 4:30 pm on the third Tuesday of each month in the sixth-floor Hearing Room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.
The commission has invited experts to speak on the specific topics. Members then will discuss the topic and answer questions from the audience. Here is a schedule of the 2018 topics:
Feb. 20: Transportation Issues for Aging in Place
March 20: No regular meeting
April 17: Alternatives to Driving - Part I
May 15: Alternatives to Driving - Part 2
June 19: No regular meeting; commission retreat
July 17: Senior Driving and Safety
Aug. 21: Planning for our transportation and mobility needs
Sept. 18: Community Design
Oct. 16: Vehicle Design and Intelligent Transportation Systems
Nov. 13: Transportation of the future
Dr. Alan DeLaTorre, research associate at Portland State University's Institute on Aging, will kick off the transportation series on Feb. 20. DeLaTorre will discuss issues pertaining to transportation options, safety, community planning and emerging technology for the growing number of older residents in the community.
The Commission on Aging, supported by the Clark County Council, is a nine-member volunteer group that implements the Aging Readiness Plan and provides leadership addressing needs of aging community members.
