Claudia Black for Senate District 19

November 22, 2017

Tualatin, OR--Claudia Black, who has worked for decades in Salem to boost health care for Oregon children and helped reform the health care system, is seeking the appointment for State Senate, District 19 (the seat currently occupied by Senator Richard Devlin).

Ms. Black has an extensive record of accomplishments both working with the Legislature and in state government. A former police officer and PTA president, she began working for a state senator before working in governmental relations for the Oregon Health Authority (then the Department of Human Services), the Department of Corrections, and the Oregon Medical Association. The Bicycle Helmet Bill was the first piece of legislation she initiated and worked to pass.

As Gov. Ted Kulongoski’s senior policy advisor on Health and Human Services, she spearheaded the Healthy Kids Initiative to provide access to health care for all children in Oregon.

Ms. Black was the Director of Government Relations for Multnomah County since 2010 where she worked to expand access to physical and mental health care, clean up the air, improve the public health system and pass common sense public safety legislation.  Her successful efforts to reduce opiate overdose deaths by making antidotes more available have saved thousands of lives.

This legislative session, she obtained the final allocation of state funding to complete the Multnomah County Courthouse as well as working with Metro area lobbyists to reduce traffic congestion through the Transportation Funding Package.

"I am a persistent and tenacious person who will not give up until the job gets done,” says Ms. Black.  "I have spent my entire career working to improve the lives of Oregonians. I want to continue to put my energy and experience working on their behalf. I am excited about the opportunity to serve as a member of the State Senate."
