Awards for Commitment to Employing People with Developmental Disabilities

October 31, 2017

Vancouver, Wash. - Pacific Crest Custom Cabinetry and Marshalls were named the large and small businesses of the year, respectively, earlier this month by the Clark County Developmental Disabilities Advisory Board during its 17th annual awards event called Employment for All: Inclusion Drives Innovation.

The event, which marked October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, was cosponsored by the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, New Seasons Market, Umpqua Bank and the advisory board. The awards recognize businesses, agencies and residents who support employees with developmental or intellectual disabilities as well as outstanding employees.

Pacific Crest Custom Cabinetry was honored for restructuring tasks to support the skills of its workers and work with them to ensure they work as many hours as they can. The company has created an atmosphere that brings workers together as a team and that values each employee.

Marshalls was honored for hiring workers of all backgrounds and perspectives, going to great lengths to make all employees successful, and recognizing each person for her or his contributions.

This year, two people in supported positions were named the 2017 Employee of the Year.

Austin Ewald, a courtesy clerk at the Safeway at Mill Plain Boulevard and Andresen Road, is never too busy to help a co-worker. He has a keen eye for details that helps keep the store looking clean and tidy.

Christopher Gaston is known at SEH America, where he has worked 21 years, for his humor and gregarious nature. Honored for his long tenure and performance, he exemplifies how capabilities far exceed barriers.

Carolyn Newton, a manager at Goldman and Associates, was honored with the David Hanawalt Service Award for her support of employees with developmental or intellectual disabilities.

Harold Rains, finance manager for Clark County Community Services, was honored with the Dennis Campbell Outstanding Service Award for his efforts to increase diversity and supported employment at Clark County and throughout the region.
