Author Kalanithi to Headline Medical Scholarship Event

October 10, 2017

The Oregon Medical Association (OMA) and Oregon Medical Education Foundation (OMEF) are pleased to jointly announce a celebrity author appearance—a unique evening featuring special guest Dr. Lucy Kalanithi, MD, FACP of the Stanford School of Medicine.

Kalanithi will appear at Portland’s The Nines Hotel, 525 SW Morrison Street on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. Advance tickets are available online at theOMA.org/OMEFevent. Admission is $40, $10 for students, with funds benefitting the OMEF’s medical education scholarship fund and health programming activities.

In this intimate, interview-style event, Dr. Kalanithi will speak in memory of her husband, discussing the joy of living and finding meaning in the practice of medicine.

Dr. William “Bud” Pierce, chair of the OMEF board, notes that no affiliation with the foundation is necessary for attendees.

“We want to share Dr. Kalanithi’s message of hope far and wide, so the interview event is designed for the general public,” said Pierce. “We’re especially excited to welcome readers, book clubs, and anyone interested in end of life care and the impact of cancer on families.”

Kalanithi was married to Dr. Paul Kalanithi, who detailed his struggle with Stage IV lung cancer in the New York Times bestselling memoir When Breath Becomes Air. Dr. Lucy Kalanithi wrote the epilogue to her husband’s book.

Dr. Kalanithi’s interview will be conducted by award-winning broadcast journalist Laural Porter of Portland’s KGW News. A veteran news anchor, Porter’s previous interviewees include three Nobel Prize recipients: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, President Barack Obama and activist journalist Malala Yousafzai.

As a sign of her commitment to the cause of the OMEF, Porter has generously requested that her normal event appearance fee be donated back to the foundation.

An internal medicine physician and faculty member at the Stanford School of Medicine in Palo Alto, CA, Lucy Kalanithi completed her medical degree at Yale, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society. She completed her residency at the University of California-San Francisco and a postdoctoral fellowship training in healthcare delivery innovation at Stanford’s Clinical Excellence Research Center.
