AFT: Patients Need Nurse Staffing Standards

Bills Sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep. Schakowsky Will Improve Patient Care
March 27, 2015

WASHINGTON—Statement by Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers—the nation’s second largest union representing nurses—on bills sponsored by Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., that set safe nurse-to-patient ratios:

"Study after study has shown that when nurses can spend enough time with each patient, patient outcomes improve. On the flip side, as we see today in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, in the absence of a law setting minimum nurse staffing levels, nurses’ patient load is often excessive and quality care is compromised. We applaud Rep. Schakowsky and Sen. Boxer for standing up for quality patient care, and we will work to help ensure that these bills pass so that every patient receives the attention and care they need."
