Over the weekend, nonprofits distributed 500 air conditioning units to households in the Portland area thanks to a $5 million allocation from the Legislature.
As more heatstroke patients arrived at hospitals in Washington, doctors used human body bags filled with ice and water to quickly immerse and cool several elderly people.
"We are now seeing the resulting demand for emergency services provided by our hospitals," said Dr. Dana Hargunani, chief medical officer for the Oregon Health Authority, about the heat wave.
