OHCA’s Director of Research Receives Fulbright Award

Walter Dawson, PhD, awarded grant for research-based comparison of U.S. and Canadian long term care systems

Walter Dawson, PhD, Director of Research and Analytics at the Oregon Health Care Association and part-time lecturer in Portland State University’sSchool of Community Health, Institute on Aging has been awarded a 2015-16 Fulbright Award to Canada. Beginning September 2015, Dawson will lecture and research Canada’s long term care system as Visiting Research Chair in Governance & Public Policy at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada for four months.

“We couldn’t be more proud of Walt’s remarkable achievement,” said Jim Carlson, President and CEO, Oregon Health Care Association. “For 65 years, Oregon has been a national leader in providing care to seniors and people with disabilities, and Walt’s research will help ensure Oregon remains at the forefront of providing quality care across the long term care continuum.”

During his Fulbright grant, Dawson will complete a research-based comparison of the U.S. and Canada’s long term care system and investigate how Canadian policies and culture impact its system of caring for older adults. His research will include in-depth interviews with Canadian policymakers, care providers, and advocacy groups. In addition to research, Walt will give guest lectures on Oregon’s long term care system and his national work on health and aging policy in the United States.

This distinct honor places Dawson as one of approximately 1,100 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program in 2015-2016. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between people of the United States and the people of other countries.
