Press Release: Greg Walden: Collection Sites On Saturday For Excess Opioids

April 25, 2019

Continuing to highlight the need for an “all-hands-on-deck” approach to combat the opioid crisis in Oregon, Representative Greg Walden (R-Hood River) today announced collection sites across Oregon’s Second Congressional District for the disposal of excess opioid and prescription medications. Walden’s announcement is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, April 27. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day gives people across the country the opportunity to help address prescription drug abuse in their communities. Details on collection sites in Oregon’s Second District are included below.

"Combating the opioid crisis in Oregon requires an all-hands-on-deck approach,” said Walden. “The Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day provides a safe, convenient, and responsible way for people to dispose of excess prescription drugs. This nationwide initiative also provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the opioid crisis and to educate our friends, family members, and neighbors about the potential for abuse of medications. We lose more than 100 Americans every day to this crisis and, here in Oregon, more people die from drug overdoses than from car accidents. I hope you’ll participate on this Take Back Day as we work together to make our communities safer.”

Walden’s announcement comes just six months after President Trump signed into law the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act (H.R. 6), Walden’s landmark legislation to combat the opioid crisis. This bipartisan legislation that was signed into law in October aims to strengthen nationwide efforts to combat the opioid crisis by advancing treatment and recovery initiatives, improving prevention, protecting our communities, and bolstering our efforts to fight deadly illicit synthetic drugs like fentanyl. The SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act represents the largest legislative effort to combat a single drug crisis in history.
