July 8, 2009 -- Cathy Kaufmann, MSW, has been tapped to lead the new office of Healthy Kids at the Department of Human Services. As the policy and communications director for Children First for Oregon, she was a strong advocate of the healthcare expansion that will provide coverage to 80,000 children during the next two years.

With an $11 million budget, Kaufmann will oversee a grants program to implement this plan, with the majority of those funds going to local communities, said Patty Wentz, DHS spokeswoman. This revenue comes from the provider tax and federal matching funds.

During the 2009 legislative session, Kaufmann co-chaired the Human Services Coalition of Oregon. “The opportunity to move from being an advocate for healthcare expansion for all of Oregon's children to being part of the team that is going to successfully implement that expansion is simply too good to pass up,” she told supporters.
